My five-year-old isn’t very good at brushing her teeth. What is the best way to teach her better oral hygiene?

he best way to improve the oral hygiene of your child is to create an involvement on her part.

The goal is to make brushing teeth a fun and enjoyable experience for your child. Creating a day-to-day routine is key for good oral hygiene. I would advise you to take your child to a pharmacy or a store and have her pick a fun or amusing toothbrush and toothpaste she will use.

Most children’s toothpastes now have kid-friendly flavours that will make your child enjoy brushing her teeth. (Don’t worry if she swallows some of it.) Also, time how long she brushes her teeth, usually two to three minutes is a good timeframe for brushing.

Your child is still young and the involvement of her mother and father is ideal.

Use positive reinforcement when teaching your child good oral hygiene and remember it is preferable to visit the dentist once or twice a year for a check up.

Hope this helps, good luck and keep us updated on your daughter’s progress.

Kind regards,
