A Long Way Gone is a memoir by Ishmael Beah. It’s a true story about his life as a boy soldier fighting in the civil war that plagued Sierra Leone. He recounts the story of his past struggles and tragedies. Beah is picked up by Unicef for rehabilitation, where he struggles to find redemption with the weight of all the lives he’s killed on his shoulders. After rehabilitation, he travels to New York to raise awareness about the lives and suffering of boy soldiers.
This is an amazing read, it was touching, and it was upsetting. The language in the book was phenomenal. I couldn’t put it down. Every word Beah used was purposely used in a way to have an effect on me.
