A Family-Friendly Day at the Pearl-Qatar

by Rita Di Antonio

Whether you live on the Pearl or are planning a short visit, make the most of what the island has to offer with these fun, family-friendly activities.

1. Go for a stroll in Medina Centrale

Hailed as the Pearl’s “town-centre”, Medina Centrale is the perfect spot for a family stroll. Leave your car behind (there is plenty of free parking) and enjoy an open-air walk and some window-shopping in this Spanish-inspired neighbourhood. Stop at one of the many cafés and restaurants—most of which offer al fresco seating—if you need a snack or want to dine.

2. Gaze at the fountains

Before you leave Medina Centrale, make sure to visit Souq Al Medina, a conservatory-style building, and check out the indoor and outdoor fountains, which are sure to entertain curious little ones. The dancing fountain in Souq Al Medina’s courtyard lights up after sundown. Be aware however that playing in the water is not allowed.

3. Hitch a tuk-tuk ride

Residents and visitors can now move around the island onboard little blue tuk-tuks. Perfect to move from one area of the Pearl to another without having to worry about parking; this service is already a favourite among residents—it is a great way to explore the Pearl and soak up its amazing views. The blue tuk-tuks are usually parked outside Qanat Quartier’s main gate, by the valet parking area. Alternatively, you can call +974 506-648-34 and ask to be picked up at any location within the Pearl. Waiting times are typically less than 15 minutes. The tuk-tuks are available daily from 10:00 to 22:00.

4. Catch the water taxi

The water taxi is another great option for moving around Porto Arabia and checking out the Pearl’s views. It connects Porto Arabia to the canals of Qanat Quartier, the Pearl’s Venetian-style neighbourhood, where new restaurants, cafés and shops are opening on a monthly basis. The water taxis run daily from Porto Arabia (Gate 11) to Qanat Quartier (by Evergreen Organics café) and back, every 20 minutes, from 9am to 11pm. A two-way ticket on the water taxi costs QR 25. Pearl residents can buy an unlimited monthly pass for QR 100.

5. Take a spin on the merry-go-round

Walk along the marina in Porto Arabia to check out the beautiful yachts parked along the pier, and surprise your little ones with a ride on the merry-go-round near Tower 18. Tickets are QR 20 per ride.

6. Geek out

Comic books lovers will be pleased to know that one of the latest additions to Qanat Quartier, Doha Comics, is now open daily between 2pm and 10pm. Check Doha Comics Facebook page for information on new arrivals and special events.

7. Luxuriate at the beach and pool

Though public beaches are restricted to Pearl residents, luxury resort Marsa Malaz Kempinski offers daily passes to visitors who wish to enjoy its private beach and outdoor pools, including a children’s pool. Lifeguards supervise both the pools and beach, giving parents additional peace of mind. The beach is open from 6am to sunset, while the pools are open 6am to 9pm. Family passes are only available Sunday to Wednesday for QR 750 per day. Valet parking is available at the resort.

8. Get excited at Megapolis

Located in Medina Centrale, this 5,000-sqm family entertainment centre has something for everyone—it features a bowling alley, pool tables, car racing and golf simulators, an array of arcade games, and karaoke rooms available for private hire. Minipolis, a play area for smaller children, was under construction at the time of writing. Once open, it will feature an indoor rock climbing wall, inflatable games and a Lego area.
